Living Legends in Actions

Seeing these old men doing action like how they did during their golden ages, when they were young and spiritful, really touches me. Their times have long passed, but their spirits are (were) still there.

Chuck Berry is…aw crap, no need to introduce him. Who doesn’t know a great rock n roll guitarist like him? Like dat oso you don’t know… Nobody raises hand. OK, anyway this is from 2008 live concert in Brazil. I am sure that at that time nobody could expect some skillful performance from him. He played with some flaws, but as you can see he was still able to play the solo, and even did the infamous duck walk in his 81st year of life, for God’s sake! If he came to my town, I would certainly spare some time to attend his concert. Seeing a living legend perform is priceless. Currently he still plays in here once a month. Oh, if I were a student of WUSTL…

Uh oh…after Chuck Berry, I need to mention BB King, his blues counterpart. As his health deteriorates, he has less concerts nowadays, but when he plays, he can still play guitar really well. Even better than Chuck Berry! In this video, you can see that even in 2006 when he was 81 he still got the soul.

Lou Thesz was a professional wrestler who invented Powerbomb and Lou Thesz Press moves. Born in 1916, he retired for this business in 1979, but had his final match in 1990 when he was 74. Yes, of course this kind of match is an arranged one, but it still requires some stamina, and I was surprised when I watched it. As you can see in the below video, he succesfully performed a back drop. He also tried to do a Powerbomb (or Piledriver?), a move usually associated to big wrestlers since it requires lifting your opponent, but – as expected – he failed at it. Nice try, lad, I am very touched . He died in 2002, BTW.

Gyula Grosics was the goalkeeper of Hungarian football team, playing in the same squad as Ferenc Puskas. Retired in 1962, he was given chance to play for Ferencvárosi in 2008 for a short time, being subsequently substituted by another goalkeeper after a few minutes. His shirt number, 1, was then retired.

Lastly, Johannes Heesters. A performer, actor and singer, he still performs in the age of 105. He speaks really clearly and loudly! And BTW, he smokes. And BTW, he was a friend of Hitler.

So What Do You Want From Us?

I just recently read a profile of Yohanes Sulaiman, a recent Indonesian PhD graduate from Ohio State University, who is also a teaching associate there. Some comments from his ex-students in this page:

Very difficult to understand his accent.

Additionally, his native language is NOT English.

Whoa. Perfect checkmates against foreign professor.

So what do you want us (or them?) to do? Learn your accent? Is it always good to imitate?

But just in case, I am practising British English. So far this is the one of two most appealing accents to me, the other being Scottish English (hell yeah Britannia rules the wave!). Not a specific regional British English but just a generic one. At first I may sound weird and you can apparently feel that I am faking it. And even my lips got tired after a few minutes! But so yeah, I hope my accent gets better gradually over time.

BTW, as International Politics and International Relations students, you are expected to comprehend non-native accents of English aren’t you? Have you ever heard of Singlish?

In case somebody doesn’t notice.

I strongly oppose the idea that we must follow either American or British or any other native accent of English when we speak in that language. I think that Indian should be freely speak in that langauge, and so do Chinese, Japanese, German, Italiano, etc. Of course as non-native speakers we are obliged to practise to speak English correcly, i.e. to pronounce words correctly, use grammar wisely, and so on and so forth. But that is only it. When it comes to dialect / accent, we should not restrict people.

Then why do I learn British English? Because firstly it is cool, and secondly I think it will be easier for native speakers to understand me. Of course the first reason gives much more weight than the second, because it is pointed out in remembrance of great British rock bands.

So, my fellow Javanese people, use Javanese English, ya?

Coding

Kalo coding buat project sendiri, misal untuk PR, niat banget. Tapi kok coding untuk project besar yang butuh teamwork males ya? Rasanya beraaaaat gitu. Hipotesisnya, karena yang terakhir ini ga begitu dipahami struktur programnya, karena saking kompleksnya dan kalau harus memahami seluruhnya butuh waktu yang lama. Lha terus gimana caranya biar tahu mana fungsi yang dipanggil setiap ada event saja, atau yang dipanggil tiap frame, dsb? Ya ditrackback dong. Dan itu yang bikin malas. Sigh.
